The Dry Eye Clinic, Ra'anana, Israel
We are here to help the many patients who suffer from the dry eyes and blepharitis (inflamed eye lids). If you suffer from recurrent burning eyes, red eyes, often worse at night or on awakening, or if your eyes become sore and blurry when working on the computer, you may well have dry eyes.
Most of our patients have already attended other clinics and received help with various eye drops, but often this doesn't give sufficient relief. We offer specialised diagnostics to assess all the reasons for your dry eyes. We have advanced treatments not available in the Israeli public system (Kupat Holim) such as IPL, Maskin Probing and other techniques, together with other medical treatments, and manage to improve the symptoms of more than 80% of our patients.
(Intense Pulsed Light (IPL
Excessive evaporation of your tears is the commonest reason that your eyes feel dry, and this is due to poorly functioning, and blocked tear glands (meibomian gands) within your eye lids
What is IPL?
Intense Pulse Light (IPL) uses a series of controlled pulses of bright light applied to the skin of the eye lids, which stimulate the meibomian glands to produce tears more efficiently. IPL is well established treatment for certain skin conditions and in the fields of aesthetics/anti-ageing. It has also been used for dry eye treatments for almost 10 years.
How many treatments are required?
Four treatments are required for maximum effect, spaced every 3-4 weeks. Some patients feel benefit within days after just the first treatment. For others benefit isn’t felt until after 3-4 treatments depending on the severity of the problem.
How is IPL performed?
The skin around the eyes is cleaned and any make up removed in advance. A special contact lens is placed in each eye for protection against the bright flashes. Clear gel is spread over the treatment area, and the pulses of light are applied in a row from ear to ear, and over the eye lids. Sometimes a massage of the eye lids is then performed to encourage the flow of tears.
How long does the treatment take?
Each treatment session takes about 15-20 minutes
What type of light is used?
Unlike laser, the IPL is polychromatic, meaning that it has a range of wavelengths ranging from 500-1200nm, which is applied to the treatment area. The IPL stimulates the eyelid tear glands to function more efficiently.
How quickly does the treatment work?
For most patients the effect on the tear glands starts within hours after the first treatment and lasts for about 10 days, although patients may not feel any change at this stage. After the second treatment the effect is for 2-3 weeks and after the fourth for many months. The effect of treatment is cumulative ie treatment lasts longer after a number of treatments.
Is the treatment painful?
No. Sometimes patients feel a slight pricking sensation with each pulse of light.
